From the Principal's Desk

Greetings,

I am believing that you all had a successful, safe, and healthy Thanksgiving holiday break. It was nice for some of us to have the opportunity to slow down and reflect on our lives. We also know that some families were not as fortunate and we want you to know that we are here for you. If you need anything, please let us know and we will do anything we can to support you and your family.

Here are a few weekly updates:

  • Monday, 11/30 is an A-Day.

  • Free Flu Vaccinations: Our Beaumont Health Center is offering free flu vaccinations to anyone ages 10+ in the community until 12/11/20. Here is the FLYER with additional information.

  • Free Meals: Don’t forget we have free breakfast and lunch provided by the district. Follow the directions below to set up an account and take advantage of this great opportunity.

  • Parent Teacher Conferences: Pierce Virtual Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Thursday, 12/10 from 3:30-5:30pm and 6:00-8:00pm. Teachers will begin contacting families of students that are showing minimal evidence of their learning or are poorly engaged. If you are contacted by a teacher, it is imperative that you schedule a time to meet with your child’s teacher(s). I will share the link for all additional families to schedule conferences on Sunday, 12/6. If all of the time slots are taken, teachers will be available to correspond with you at another time.

Greetings Pierce Families,

  • Monday, 11/16 is a B-Day.

  • Parent Teacher Conferences: A tentative date and time for virtual Parent Teacher Conferences will be Thursday, 12/10 from 3:30-8:30pm. You will be able to schedule conferences with your child’s teachers through a program called PTC Wizard. Information to sign up will be shared as soon as all plans are finalized, hopefully by next week. Please begin to look at your student’s progress now within Canvas.

  • Report Cards: We are not mailing or emailing report cards this marking period. I encourage you to take a look at your child's academic progress within Canvas. With Standards Based Grading, you can see where your student is making progress according to each standard in each class. You must become an observer in your student’s Canvas account to monitor their progress. Here are the steps to become an observer in Canvas. If you have any questions, please contact the school at 313-937-8880.

    • Click here to go through the steps to become a Parent/Guardian Observer in Canvas

    • You child's classes are not like they were in the spring. You MUST attend class and demonstrate your learning to your teachers through assignments and assessments in Canvas. Also remember that a 1 or a 0 grade means no credit. If you have questions about your learning progression, please reach out directly to your teacher(s).

  • Does Your Child Enjoy Writing Short Stories? If your student enjoys writing stories, please have them enter the Write Michigan Short Story Contest. This is a great opportunity for writers of all ages to get their story published and win a $500 cash prize. Entries are accepted at www.writemichigan.org through November 30 at noon. It's free to enter for those 17 and younger.

  • For All Technology Related Issues: If your child has any technology issues, please complete this form. Click this for the District Technology Assistance Request

Greetings Pierce Families,

I hope you are enjoying this beautiful Fall weekend, but most importantly I hope your family is remaining healthy and safe during this time. So much is going on between the pandemic, the election, and regular life. If you were not aware due to all of the distractions, we just made it through the first Marking Period of the school year. Yes, ten weeks of the school year have expired. Here are a few updates and reminders to make it through this week:

  • Monday, 11/9 is an A-Day.

  • Parent Teacher Conferences: We are planning to hold virtual Parent Teacher Conferences next month in order for you to connect with your student’s teachers. You will receive more information, an official date, and how to sign up next week once plans are finalized. Remember, teachers are available everyday if you are concerned about your child’s progress.

  • Zoom Attendance and Engagement: Firstly, we love to see students in Zoom! If you can, please have your camera on during class. Also, I want all parents and students to be aware that teachers can and will call on students during Zoom classes. Students must respond in a timely manner that demonstrates their attendance and engagement. If students do not respond vocally, visually, or in writing they can be marked as an unexcused absence for the class unless a prior arrangement has been made with the teacher.

  • Paper 24/7 Tutoring Service: Don’t forget, we have a tutoring service for all students. Click on this link to access Paper. The link is also in Canvas on the Dashboard for all students. Here is a testimonial from one of our own 8th grade students:

"Good afternoon!
I wanted to tell you that I used paper tutoring service for question 50 on the homework today.  It was very helpful! The tutor I was given was nice AND they didn't think I was slow. They also didn't mind explaining things and reiterating things. Thank you so much for requesting us to use this because if I hadn't used this, I'd still be confused about this whole concept."

Have an outstanding week!

Greetings Pierce Families,

Welcome to November! I hope you all had a safe and prosperous October. As you know, the district is continuing with virtual learning through November with the possibility of returning to school if things improve in the area. If we return to school, the district will share that information with all families with two weeks notice in order for everyone to make appropriate arrangements. If you selected the virtual option for your child for 1st Semester, then your child will remain in the virtual classroom until the end of the semester. There will be the opportunity to make a selection for the 2nd Semester in the near future.

Here are a few updates and announcements:

  • VOTE on Tuesday, 11/3!!! Not only is this a presidential election, butSRSD also has school board seats on the ballot. Vote your personal convictions and core beliefs that are best for the future of our community and students. It’s your right!

  • Monday, 11/2 is an A-Day and Wednesday will be a B-Day.

    • There will be NO SCHOOL on Tuesday, 11/3. The staff will be going through another professional development. Nothing will be posted in Canvas for students on Tuesday.

  • Does Your Student Enjoy Writing? If your student enjoys writing stories, please encourage them to enter the Write Michigan Short Story Contest. This is a great opportunity for writers of all ages to get their story published and win a $500 cash prize. Entries are accepted at www.writemichigan.org through November 30 at noon. It's free to enter for those 17 and younger.

  • Secondary Canvas Webinar: We held a Canvas webinar on Wednesday night for families. Below are the resources mentioned in the webinar:

  • Magnetic School Calendar: You will be receiving a magnetic calendar in the mail from Pierce in the next week or so with Pierce specific dates and info. Here is the SRSD District Calendar.

  • Halloween Costume/Spirit Wear Contest: Winners of the costume contest and movie trivia questions will be announced later this week once votes are tallied.

  • PMS PTO Virtual Movie Night:  Thank you to the Pierce PTO Executive Board (Dana Johnson-Meah, Star Edison, and Misha Early) for holding a very successful Virtual Movie Night. We could tell in the chat that the students were having a fun time. We are planning to have another virtual event in November. More information to come.

Greetings Pierce Families,

We had great success last week with NWEA testing. Thank you for your assistance and diligence getting your student online and on time for their testing. We need these tests results and data in order for us to monitor student growth and progress throughout the year.

Here are a few important updates and reminders for this week:

  • Monday, 10/19 will be an A-Day.

  • Zoom Authentication: All Pierce students received another email to authenticate their SRSD Zoom account on Friday, 10/16.  If they have not accepted the invitation from Zoom, they will not be able to join next week, beginning Monday, 10/19.

    • Where is the invitation? The invitation did not go to parents’ emails. It was sent directly to your student’s South Redford email account from Zoom, not their Canvas inbox.

    • The invitation says that it expired: If a student clicks to accept the invitation and it says that it is expired, it means they have already accepted it and are all set.

  • Technology Issues: Click this for the District Technology Assistance Request

  • Parent Observer in Canvas: Click here to go through the steps to become a Parent/Guardian Observer in Canvas

  • Internet Access: If your internet connection is not suitable for virtual school, please call the school office at 313-937-8880 so we can assist you. We want all students to have access to their learning.

  • Thank a Teacher: On Wednesday, I shared your messages to each teacher. Every teacher received messages of thanksgiving, encouragement, and appreciation, and those messages went a long way for morale. They were surprised and on cloud nine from those messages. Thank you for your acts of kindness. Pierce families are the best!

Have an outstanding week!

Greetings Pierce Families,

It was a beautiful week and it was great to meet and speak with so many of you on Thursday and Friday. Many of you are finally getting into the Pierce “Virtual” School groove, even though some are struggling still, but we are committed to get everyone connected and on board. Here are a few reminders, announcements, and updates for you.

  • Monday (9/27) is an A-Day.

  • Class Resources Pick-Up: Thank you to every parent and student that came to pick up items this past Thursday and Friday. If you were not able to make it, please come to the school during school hours (8:00-3:45) to pick up your student’s items. We would like all students to have the resources we have set aside for them.

  • Student Zoom Accounts: All students received an email to authenticate their SRSD Zoom account. If they have not done so, soon they will not be able to join the classes once we set up the new safeguards for all Zoom sessions. The invitation was sent to every students’ SRSD email account from Zoom.

  • Student Tech Check: Please make sure your student has completed the Student Tech Check so we know which model everyone has in their possession. If your student has an older model, it may not perform to the standards we need it to for our current state of virtual learning.

  • Canvas Parent Access: We know many of you signed up to become observers in your student’s Canvas account. As teachers begin to enter assignments and scores, we wanted to provide you with some resources that may assist in accessing and understanding these scores. Thank you for continually taking an active role in your student’s education.

  • Technology Issues: If you have any Chromebook or technology issues (including chargers), please use this link to submit a tech ticket. Click this for the District Technology Assistance Request

  • Student Attendance/Engagement: Many students have opted out of turning on their camera during class. Since they are not visible, it has made it difficult for teachers to know if they are actively engaged. From this point forward, teachers can/will call on students during class. Students must respond in a timely manner that demonstrates their attendance and engagement. If students do not respond vocally and/or visually they will be marked as an unexcused absence for the class unless a prior arrangement has been made with the teacher.

  • Internet Access: Do you have an internet connection home? Is your internet connection subpar, and your student is not able to access any school resources? Please call the school office at 313-937-8880 so we can assist you. We want all students to have access to their learning.

  • Having Issues During School?: If you are having pressing issues that need to be addressed immediately, please contact the school office at 313-937-8880. We have a team of people ready and willing to help you.

Feel free to contact the school at the number below, and as always Mr. Hull and I are available if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.

Greetings Students and Families,

Thank you for your diligent work, patience, and grace as we held a highly successful first week of fully virtual school. We have received feedback from staff, students, and community members on ways to improve our processes and protocols, and we are taking all matters into consideration as we learn how to be effective teachers and leaders in this new school model.

Here are a few updates for both students and parents as we move into this new week:

  • Student Credentials: If {student_firstname} does not know or have credentials for Student Connect or Canvas, contact the main office at 313-937-8880. Someone on our staff will be able to assist you. All 6th grade students received their Student Connect credentials last week. All students that have attended their classes have successfully logged into Canvas.

  • Need a Chromebook: If you are still in need of a Chromebook, please complete this Chromebook Request Form.

  • Parent Canvas Access: All parents will receive information for parent access to Canvas this week. Stay tuned.

  • PMS Virtual Student Schedule: This week we will be following our Pierce Bell Schedule exactly as it is written. It is also attached as a pdf.

  • Behavior on Zoom: Remember that your Zoom meetings are live classrooms where appropriate behaviors are expected and appreciated. Despite the remote nature of our learning environment, the Pierce Code of Conduct applies to all students during the school day.

  • Student Zoom Guidelines:

    • Always use your First and Last name as a screen name. No nicknames

    • Mute your microphone when you are not speaking.

    • It is highly encouraged that your camera be on, but not mandatory

    • Stage your area.

    • Limit distractions that you can control such as: other technology, household activity, etc.

    • Avoid multitasking and focus on what’s happening live.

    • Use the chat room to ask relevant questions only. All chats are recorded, even private chats.

Greeting Pierce Students and Families,

I hope your Labor Day is going well. Tuesday, September 8th, starting at 8:35 is the first day of school. School is beginning fully virtually with Advisory Teachers. It is recommended that all students check their SRSD emails today for an email from their Advisory teacher and any other teachers reaching out to contact them. Here are a lot of updates and reminders:

  • Jump Start: If you have not completed Online Jump Start yet, it still must be completed. Please start here: Online Jump Start .

  • ADVISORY EMAIL TO STUDENTS CONCERNS: We learned of a glitch on our student information system that did not deliver many of the emails from our staff to students this past week. All Advisory teachers will be emailing their students again (only the students) by the end of the day today with information for school tomorrow. If the student does not receive an email please contact the Advisory Teacher and they can forward the message to you another way. You can find the Advisory Teachers on the student class schedule in  Parent Connect.

  • Returning South Redford Students (Including incoming 6th graders): This is your email address: studentnumber@students.southredford.net. If the student does not know or remember the email password, please click here for a refresher: Chromebook Login Information This information will help you access your Student and Parent Portal information as well as student email accounts. • All 6th grader emails passwords are MMDDYYYY

    • 7th & 8th graders’ email passwords are their Student Connect passwords & Chromebook passwords

  • Chromebook Updates for Canvas: Let’s have our Chromebooks ready for Tuesday! Students may need to update their Chromebooks to work with Canvas. Especially if they are using a device from this past spring. Please take time this weekend to follow these directions and make sure your device is charged:

    • Go to Settings (Look for the gear symbol ⚙️ in the popup menu in the lower right corner.)

    • > Click on About Chrome OS > Click on Check for Updates > You may be prompted to Restart.  When it is updated it should say version 83 or 84.

  • Student Class Schedules/Advisory: Students can view their class schedule (1st-6th hours) by viewing on Student Connect or you can show them using this link for Parent Connect (The same thing that you used to do Jump Start). If you do not see your schedule, please know that our counselors are working to finalize some schedules that may be incomplete. If you are newly registered within the last week, you may not have a full schedule until Tuesday. Please contact the school office if you do not have a schedule at 313-937-8880 and ask for the counseling secretary.

  • Daily Block Schedule (A/B Day): This is the student and staff daily block schedule. Tuesday, 9/8 and Wednesday 9/9, students will remain in a Zoom with their Advisory teacher all morning from 8:35-12:30 to get to know each other and learn how to navigate through Canvas. They will be given access to Canvas tomorrow in Advisory.

  • Student Remote Learning Schedule: This is the school detailed block schedule with times for all students starting on Thursday. Thursday will be an A-DAY. This will give you an idea of what you should expect your student to be doing during each day from 8:35am-3:28pm.

  • Chromebook Distribution: Our next Chromebook distribution is scheduled on Wednesday (9/9) and Thursday (9/10) of next week.

    • If you have your own and plan to use your own electronic device, you are not required to take an SRSD Chromebook.

    • If you have a SRSD Chromebook from a previous distribution, you must keep that one.

    • If you are in need of a device, you must do these two things below. We will send a message to you with details and confirming the next distribution.

  1. Complete Online JumpStart by clicking HERE if you have not already done so.

  2. Please complete this Pierce Chromebook Request Form by 5:00pm on Thursday, 9/10.

  • Canvas Access: Students will gain access to Canvas tomorrow. Parents will gain access next week at the earliest.

  • ZOOM Chromebook Update: Here is the solution to be able to use Zoom on your Chromebooks for tomorrow. Please use this link and follow it step by step.

  • Student Emails: I gave the wrong email information to student emails. All student emails addressed are studentnumber@students.southredford.net. You have to include “students” in the name.

I hope this message clears things up for most of you. I cannot express how thankful I am for your grace and patience as we progress through these last days of summer break and first moments of the school year. Once we get going it will all come together. I promise, we will continue to communicate effectively and regularly to the Pierce family. There are so many new pieces, that I cannot share everything until it’s time for you to know. I appreciate you all and I look forward to tomorrow! Enjoy the rest of your Labor Day!

Greetings Families,

HERE WE GO! The time has come for the school year to finally begin on Tuesday, 9/8 at 8:35am, and the staff is so excited to meet you. As you know, we have been working diligently for this day since school abruptly ended in March this year. Practically everything we are doing now is new to everyone and we are cautiously excited. When depending on technology, we will ask for everyone to be gracious and patient with us as we navigate through these uncharted waters. Here are our most recent updates:

  • First Day of School: All students are starting virtually (online), until further notice. By now, all Pierce students should have received a welcome email from their Advisory teacher to make arrangements for the first day of remote classes on September 8th at 8:35am. If you have not received an email by Monday, 9/7, please email me directly and I will assist you. Students will spend the first two days learning how to navigate through Canvas and building relationships with their Advisor and classmates. It is vitally important that all students are in attendance for these first days of school so they can learn how to use Canvas as it will be how all students interact with their teachers for synchronous and asynchronous learning.

  • Student & Parent Canvas Access: Students will receive their credentials for Canvas on the first day of school during Advisory. Parent access information will come the following week.

  • Chromebook Login InformationSome students may have forgotten how to log into their Chromebook. Please follow these instructions to get onto your SRSD issued Chromebook. If your student cannot remember their password, please contact their advisory teacher and they can support you with that information.

  • District Technology Assistance Request: Beginning Tuesday, 9/8 the district will begin providing technology assistance for all SRSD Chromebooks and devices. Please complete the form if you need technology assistance and we will begin assisting you starting the first day of school.

  • Chromebook Distribution: We held our first of several distributions on Thursday, 9/3 of this week. Many additional families have requested Chromebooks and we are planning our next distribution scheduled on Wednesday (9/9) and Thursday (9/10) of next week.

  • Student Class Schedules: Student schedules are available in Parent and/or Student Connect to view at this time. If you do not have a schedule, our counselors are working to create or finalize some schedules that may be incomplete. If you are newly registered within the last week, you may not have a schedule until Tuesday. Please contact the school office if you do not have a schedule or Advisory Teacher by then at (313)937-8880.

  • First Weeks A/B Schedule: As we begin this year, we have learned to remain flexible with our plans. As a secondary team (6th-12th grades), we believe it would be best to adjust the schedule for the first two days to allow our students to first begin building relationships with their Advisory teachers who they will meet with daily. During these first two days, we also plan to have all students learn how to use Canvas appropriately through teacher guided online modules. This dedicated time will ensure that all students learn and perform proficiently throughout this year through Canvas. Below is our adjusted schedule:

REMINDERS

  • Free Breakfast/Lunch: Lunch and breakfast are free to all SRSD students this year. Distribution will occur at most buildings throughout the district using the Nutrislice app. Please review the attached documents to download the app to place your orders.

  • Beaumont Health ClinicBeaumont Health, MDHHS, and the South Redford School District have partnered to operate the Beaumont Child & Adolescent Health Center- Pierce, a School Based Health Center located in Pierce Middle School.  We serve ages 10 to 21 years old living in Redford Twp and surrounding communities. Insurance accepted but not required.  Services are not denied due to inability to pay. They perform a variety of services for all students that have the consent form filled out. Please complete the attached consent form in order for your child to be seen at any point during this school year. Please visit the site for more information. The student will need to submit this form when they come for their first appointment.

If you have additional questions or concerns, please contact me and/or Mr. Hull. We will respond to you within 24-48 hours. Thank you for entrusting us with the education of your child and I promise we are going to do everything within our power to make this an excellent experience for our students. Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend. You will hear from me again, most likely on Monday about Tuesday.

Greeting Pierce Families,

We are one week from the new school year! Our entire staff has been working diligently to make arrangements for a great start to this year. As you know, teaching and learning is brand new for everyone, including your child(ren). Our teachers are learning how to deliver instruction and engage students in a totally new way and it is a complete shift of practices. One goal as we enter this new year is that our teachers and your child(ren) establish a strong meaningful relationship even without physically meeting for at least a month.

I have some updated information for you in hopes to ease your mind about things that have been some of our unknowns until now.

  • Communications: So you know, I will be sending email messages regularly throughout this school year. Eventually they will only come once a week, but at the beginning of this year I may need to share more often as we navigate through this new phase of schooling. Please take some time to read through each of them.

  • Student Class Schedules: Student schedules will be available in Parent and/or Student Connect by Monday, September 7th.  Our counselors are trying to finalize as many schedules as possible before they are released.

  • First Day of School: Remember, all students are starting virtually, until further notice. Later this week, all Pierce students will receive a welcome email from their Advisory teacher to make arrangements for the first day of remote classes on September 8th. Students will spend the first two days learning how to navigate through Canvas and building relationships with their Advisor and their classmates. They will not attend any classes until Thursday, September 10th. It is vitally important that all students are in attendance for these first days of school so they can learn how to use Canvas as it will be how all students interact with their teachers for synchronous and asynchronous learning.

  • Chromebook Distribution: Today, I sent Chromebook pickup information to the families who indicated they are in need of a Chromebook in online JumpStart.

    • If you plan to use your own electronic device, you are not required to take an SRSD Chromebook.

    • If you completed the form for the distribution this week, you do not need to complete the form below.

    • If you are in need of a device, you must do these two things below. We will send a message to you about the next distribution scheduled one day next week, most likely Wednesday or Thursday.

    1. Complete Online JumpStart by clicking HERE if you have not already done so.
    2. Please complete this Pierce Chromebook Request Form

  • Student & Parent Canvas Access: Login information for both parents and students will be coming soon. Students will receive their information during the first days of school, while parent login information will come the following week.

That is all the updated information that I have at this time. I am sure I will share more information this week. I am anxiously excited about this school year. We are all doing all of this for the first time together. Please continue to give us grace as we will be learning how to do school in a new unconventional manner. We want the best for all of our students, and we will do everything we can to make this a delightful experience for everyone. Feel free to contact me and/or Mr. Hull if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.
